Edmonton Oilers Partnered with Rogers Communications

Sports and the Media
By: Emily Forloines & Alex Wenrich

On October 24th, we discussed the importance sports and the media.

The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club (NHL) announced on October 10th that they will be partnering with Rogers Communications as their official telecommunications sponsor. Rogers Communications is Canada's largest wireless voice and data communications services. This multi-year partnership is a huge step for these two organizations. Rogers intends on connecting the fans in new ways with their own expansion of the LTE network which included an investment of over $1 billion in network enhancements across Alberta.

With this new partnership, Rogers' sponsorship includes exclusive brand and advertising placements, arena signage, concourse, rink, in-ice, in-bowl and in-game applications. Rogers also has the presenting rights of the Oilers television broadcasts.

"Our partnership with Rogers brings together two longstanding Canadian organizations that are dedicated to creating the ultimate experiences for hockey enthusiasts." Said Patrick LaForge, president and chief operating officer of the Oilers.

The new sponsorship also joins together the Rogers Youth Fund and the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation to empower and assist at-risk youth in Edmonton and its suburbs.

According to Coakley's text on page 414, he explains that brand familiarity is important when sport teams and companies pair together. A sports team looks for a brand that is known to partner with because they know that will help bring a new audience to their product via brand identification. Also on page 404, Coakley describes how sports depend on the media. Professional sports need that visibility that major networking companies and media outlets can provide. With sponsors and partners, such as Rogers, the sports team will get a big name company behind their organization plus a huge company with great power in the communications world that will help get the team's name out to more people. When these two industries are paired correctly, both can grow and prosper well.
