Martin Gets Bullied

Deviance in Sport
By: Emily Forloines & Alex Wenrich

On Thursday October 31st we discussed deviance. What is deviance? Deviance is the act that differs from the norm, especially behavior or attitude that differs from acceptable social standards such as hazing and bullying. What is racism?  Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Yes, the act that most people believed to be stop once one enters high school, or so we thought. Consequently, bullying is happening in professional sports. More specifically, South Beach with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

This has been an on going event in the Miami Dolphins locker room between Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin for a full year.  He was personally fining Martin for not attending meeting at local strip clubs, and sending racist voicemails and text messages.

What has been happening?
October 30th: Jonathan Martin left the Miami Dolphins to seek help
October 31st: The Press says the Martin is suffering from emotional issues
November 2nd: Details begin to surface that Martin was bullied
November 3rd: Richie Incognito name came up and was mainly responsible.
November 4th:  Dolphins suspend Incognito. Incognito has a distaste for rookies
November 5th: Reports say that Richie had problems since 2002 with bullying at Nebraska
November 6th: Racial voice mail is discovered from Richie to Jonathan. "We joke with each other. You can't have thin skin around here," defensive tackle Randy Starks said. "We're trying to clear Richie's name. He's getting a bad rap. (USATODAY)"
November 7th: "Jonathan Martin is a 6'5 320 pound dude." Giants’ safety Antrel Rolle said. "I think he should be able to stand up for himself."
Martins Lawyer, his client "endured harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker room hazing. (USATODAY)"

Text Messages exchanged:
“Incognito said he received a text message from Jonathan Martin, before the tackle left the team and started the allegations, that read, "I will murder your whole f***ing family."

If Incognito can provide that text, and it proves to be authentic, then it could give balance to the text messages we have seen released from Martin's side of this, which have called Martin a "half-n*****," threatened to defecate in the second-year tackle's mouth, and sexually assault Martin's sister. (THAPHINSIDERS)”

According to Coakley’s text on page 171, deviance covers all the topics of cheating, gambling, shaving points, throwing games, fighting, PED’s. Nowhere does this mention hazing and bullying. Why not you ask? This should not be happening in a professional work setting. The players should have gone to the head coach Joe Philbin about the bullying the second they noticed it going to far. Did Joe Philbin know that this was going on? We have no idea, but if he had any idea about this and turned his head, he has no business being a head coach in the league. The NFL needs to make a statement and band hazing and bullying from all locker rooms to provide a save work environment.
