New 49ers Stadium Plans to be Out of this World

Sports and the Future
By: Emily Forloines & Alex Wenrich

On November 21st, we were discussing the possibilities with sports and the future including the advancement in technology and the possible shift in fan interests. Technology is still fairly young and is already a huge part of sports, so we can only expect big changes and exciting new things from both sides.

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that their new stadium will be technologically amazing. The Levi's Stadium will not only be visually pleasing but there is an application for smartphones that has been developed for the in-stadium fans that will allow them to order their beverage and food right from their phone avoiding the long lines. This application will also be streaming NFL RedZone on their personal stadium wireless internet so you can catch up with your other favorite teams and commentators right from your seat.

Professional teams are having to come up with new and exciting ways to draw fans back into the stadiums for the live games because now tickets and the whole 9 yards is beginning to cost a fortune for a family to go enjoy a football game. Plus, NFL has many television providers who offer special packages to get the whole NFL experience right from the comfort of your home. Unfortunately, live sporting events are showing a decrease in attendance at the actual games which is very concerning.

According to page 561 from Coakley's text, people are using these new technologies to formulate their standards for their overall experience. People use technologies such as television, computers, and the Internet to imagine how sport could be different or more advanced. The worlds of sports and technology are moving so quickly that some technologies that were introduced two or three years ago are obsolete at this point, not because people don't use them anymore but because new information and better formulas have been developed. All of these teams are making new apps for smartphones trying to get more interaction from the fans, but these apps might just be doing the opposite by isolating people to their own interests on their personal devises.
